Your honeymoon is your and your partner’s chance to relax as a married couple, so you don’t want to spend that time worrying about environmental impact. Here’s a quick guide to a more eco-friendly honeymoon, to alleviate your worries.

If you put in the work to make your wedding day as sustainable as possible (and unfortunately, despite your good intentions, that decision can feel like work) then it’s likely you’ll want your honeymoon to be similarly eco-friendly. This may seem like another looming ordeal, but it doesn’t have to be! It may require a tad more planning, research and effort than a traditional honeymoon, but there’s no reason it won’t be as lovely, relaxing, and romantic as you and your new spouse deserve!

Keeping close to home.

While opting for a stay-cation may not feel as romantic as sunbathing on an exotic beach or overlooking a river in a quaint chalet, any way you can reduce the emissions of your travel will go a long way to helping you have a sustainable honeymoon with your partner! Maybe you’ll discover a secret gem near you that you’d been missing all this time - plus, with a stay-cation there’s no need to worry about where you last left your passport…

Climate-conscious travel.

Regardless of whether you’re staying on home shores or heading abroad, avoid traveling by plane. Compared to other forms of transport, air travel’s proportional effects on the environment are enormous. Instead, travel by train for as much as you can - if you’re headed out of the UK, perhaps investigate where the Eurostar can take you - but don’t forget that boats are always an option (unless one of you is prone to seasickness… that may detract from the romance of a honeymoon a little).

Whilst enjoying your honeymoon - whether that’s at home or abroad - don’t travel around the area by car. You can reduce the emissions of your honeymoon by choosing to instead investigate local public transport (that may also lead you to discovering places you hadn’t expected on the way), or perhaps you want to do better not just for the planet but for your health, and walk or bike to and fro! Perhaps you’ll stumble upon a treasure no-one in a vehicle would have seen, or walk through a beautiful woodland you could have driven right past? Sometimes, not taking the easy route can beget wonderful surprises!

Eco-friendly businesses.

While you’re walking or biking or bussing around this - hopefully wonderfully romantic - place you decided to honeymoon in, you and your partner ought to be treating yourselves to a myriad of fine and delicious foods, and this is another moment where a bit of extra work will be needed for your eco-friendly honeymoon: research local sustainable restaurants and cafes. Where in the area is committed to sourcing locally? Where has good vegetarian and vegan options (if that is your persuasion)? Can you find somewhere that does all it can to limit its waste?

If you’re trying to narrow down the locations to have this more sustainable honeymoon, why not make a point to stay somewhere eco-friendly and sustainable? Plenty of hotels and resorts are being stirred on by the rising trend of people wanting to control their impact on the environment and are making themselves more eco-focussed and sustainable for climate-conscious guests.

The final, most important step of planning your eco-friendly honeymoon: make sure you’re going to enjoy it. This is your and your new spouse’s chance to relax together after celebrating your love with family and friends (an incredible day, but full-on), and your honeymoon should be an experience that you and your spouse are able to look back on fondly for years to come. Ensure that wherever you go, you’ll be happy together.

If you’re looking to decorate your home - or if wedding planning is still full steam ahead and you’re putting together your bouquet - why not see what the Hidden Botanics Etsy has for you? We are a business always striving to become more and more sustainable, and sell a wide range of dried and artificial flower arrangments that retain their scent and colour, and will not wilt like their fresh alternatives!
